UK launches vouchers for healthy food; Could be more effective than subsidizing production http://trunc.it/dninu via @FoodNewsJournal

Britain’s lawmakers introduced a program on Jan. 2 to offer 50-pound coupons for healthy food like frozen vegetables and low-fat yogurt, funded with  nearly 250 million pounds (the equivalent of $390 million, U.S.) from the food industry.

There’s plenty of skepticism of food companies’ motives according to the Reuters piece covering the program—but I’m optimistic. Whether its savvy PR or not, coupons and sales—not uniformly lower prices, which is what proposals to subsidize fruits and vegetables would yield—tend to be more effective in prompting people to change their shopping habits. And that could mean that Brits will suddenly be eating a lot more healthy food.
